Great Beach Read - A Book Review
Would you ever imagine that a fabulous fitting bra and comfortable shapewear (ones that don’t leave you "squeezing and wheezing" trying to get into them) could be related to a loving relationship? Well, Connie Elder, my friend, colleague and long time sponsor of "All things Schuller" understands the connection all too well. Connie has just written about it in a little book with a big message called My Style, My Life: Uplifting and Supporting Body and Soul. Her mission is to inspire, enlighten and empower women.
There are obvious parallels between taking good care of your appearance with undergarments and skincare and manifesting relationships that give you confidence and make you radiant. She's the good girlfriend you always needed to have level with you and hold up the mirror of truth. This breezy read is an afternoon at the beach that could change your life. Her straight from the hip style is direct, honest and sincere. She believes in women's basic rights and "talks turkey" about how to recognize if you aren't getting your needs met and provides the inspiration of where to go for help. No matter if it's finding great basics comprising your daily beauty regimen or your life partner, she tells it like it is, and was, for her.
Connie’s journey is one of self-realization and action. Her current business is called Underology, which she started after breaking free of a domestic abuse marriage. After years of being miserable, yet in denial, she suddenly realized upon routinely setting the alarm on her house before bedtime, that the only person she was afraid of was INSIDE the house, not an intruder who could break in from the outside. She had a revelation at an expo where she was working a booth and was given a pamphlet about the ten signs of domestic abuse and came to the conclusion that she was dealing, in her almost decade long marriage, with eight of them! That was her pivotal moment and she acted on wrestling free of her oppressor with careful planning and cunning self-preservation. As a result she has become extremely driven to make sure no one has to suffer the same low self-esteem she lived through before she got the courage to turn her circumstances around.
She divorced and left it all behind for a belief that there were better things for her and she deserved to have them. Underology is the business she began after she went back to work and realized that what she knew best was medical compression stocking technology. She applied that knowledge to a shapewear product that would replace the old fashioned girdle. She gave it a catchy name, Lipo in a Box, and the birth of one of the best selling undergarments on QVC was born. Underology translates to the "science of what's underneath." Quite a metaphor for what she was hiding all those years living in an abusive marriage. Talk about helping women break free! Her products are all the "hidden" things that we don’t necessarily see working, but which hugely impact our appearance and our ability to function fearlessly. Quite a few products which have become my favorites are as seemingly "superficial" as an effective skincare line, shapewear that smoothes out the lumps and bumps and makes your clothing look better, or a wonderful bra that fits and flatters the bustline and improves posture and overall silhouette. These are priceless tools in one's arsenal that helps make a woman able to face the world. I personally use all of her products and can attest to the loving care she has devoted to the development of great quality in every single item she features. Asking the tough questions such as - "Do I feel comfortable, do I feel in control, do I have to worry about every move undermining my freedom of confidence?" Can you see the acid tests questions working to ascertain the brutality in a relationship as well as a bodysuit? Not feeling trapped and finding flexibility is key, just as in life. The quickest way to improve your silhouette or your skin is to give it attention. The fastest way to change is to realize the possibilities that are out there. Explore opportunities and then go for it. Believe you can do it...no matter what it takes - believe you can do it and make a plan and persevere.
The parallels continue, you have to step outside your current situation and realize you may be wearing the wrong bra or with the wrong person. Try different styles until you find the right one. Don't just date and marry the first person who comes along. You must be more concerned with the fit, which translates into the integrity of the person, the construction of the aspects that make it function. Are you in denial about your cup size? Are you in denial about your life partner? Are they the right fit? Don’t just go by the label, i.e, don't just look at the external qualities of a person. Dig deeper and look past the superficialities of the garment or the guy! I thought I wanted someone who was tall, dark and handsome when I was 21, but my first husband became one of the greatest loves of my life. And he turned out to be shorter, paler and not that attractive by conventional standards…but did he become the most gorgeous person I had ever met in my life simply by his actions? You bet! So don't stop yourself, or allow your hasty judgments to overtake your ability to find the right person, give it a test drive! Simply put, just like with a bra, you can't feel confined, uncomfortable or out of control without your confidence being undermined. Remember how you ditched the underwire that was poking you? This little book gives everyone the courage to not take it from an underwire or an underling. Feeling superior is a noble right and it's time we reclaimed our liberty. Okay, I've made enough verisimilitudes, but you get the picture. Now read on and see that Connie means business and is giving us the challenge of reading and passing it on as only a proactive purveyor of pulchritude can do. (You may way to consult your dictionaries on that last phrase!)
I learned so much about Connie just reading this little book with its simple philosophy and guidance. It felt like "just girl talk," but its underlying message became profound by the final page. I spoke with Connie and asked her how I could help her get the word out. She is offering ten copies to Daily Venus Divas in the hopes of spreading the word to anyone who may need to hear it as she did. Connie wants to make the information accessible and available. Just as easy as ordering her products. (By the way, you can use the promo code DIVABETIC and receive 20% off your purchase. Thanks, Connie!)
Also, the first ten people to leave a comment [on Catherine's site, linked here] will be eligible to receive a free copy of My Style, My Life. Perhaps you don't need to hear the contents of its chapters, but you know someone who does...so pass it on. We women are a resilient bunch and we stick together, helping each other with warrior wisdom and a shoulder to cry on if need be. You may even be motivated and inspired after reading her little book to examine those unseen essentials of style and make a few changes for the better, whether it's with a new bra or a new beau.
